Clay County District 11 Office

Project Description

This project involved the construction of a new single-story district office building for the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet – District 11 in Clay County Kentucky. The site presented unique geotechnical challenges, as the property is underlain by mine and roadway spoils. To ensure long-term structural stability, the building’s bearing walls and a 10-inch structural slab were supported on an engineered system of grade beams tied to drilled pier foundations, extending through the spoil material to bear directly on bedrock.

The new facility is constructed with cold-formed metal framing and cold-formed metal roof trusses, featuring a mechanical mezzanine to support building systems. The exterior envelope includes brick veneer with insulation, while the interior configuration consists of metal stud partitions with gypsum board and batt insulation for acoustic performance. A standing seam metal roof provides durability and long-term weather protection.

Interior finishes were selected for both functionality and aesthetics and include carpet tile, ceramic tile, LVT flooring, gypsum board, acoustical ceiling tile, and suspended linear ceilings. The building incorporates plastic laminate casework throughout to support office and operational needs.

Mechanical systems include an outdoor fluid cooler, indoor gas-fired modulating condensing boilers, and circulating pumps, with water-source heat pumps located on the mechanical mezzanine. The electrical design features energy-efficient LED lighting throughout the facility. The project is designed to achieve LEED certification, emphasizing sustainability and long-term efficiency. Additionally, the building is equipped to operate with a full building standby emergency diesel generator, which will be provided by the owner.
