Huntington BRAC Facility

Project Description

Working as a major sub-contractor as part of a larger construction team on the government’s Base Realignment and Closure (BRAC) program, Trace Creek participated in the $7.9-million renovation of the Veterans Affairs (VA) hospital administration offices in Huntington.

Administered by the Office of the Under-Secretary of Defense for Acquisition, Technology and Logistics, BRAC is used by the Department of Defense to earmark extraneous government buildings for new purposes. Trace Creek partly demolished and rebuilt a 20,000-square-foot National Guard Armory built in the 1950s. The renovated building will provide space for scheduling, billing, and records personnel for the Huntington VA.

The first step in this project was containing and removing asbestos from the aging building. Most of the structure was then demolished except for its exterior walls and selected interior walls. The elevation of the east section was raised eight feet by means of structural steel framing, masonry construction, decking, and a bar joist. A new roof was installed on the entire building.

A new foundation was laid under the building’s center section. Because the soil at the site was deemed unsuitable for the design, foundation stabilization equipment was installed under the new foundation. An elevator tower was also erected, and a stainless steel and glass handrail wraps around part of the new elevator shaft. The main lobby features a concrete and steel balcony.
